Create, Buy & Sell Tradeable Carbon Assets
As more businessses strive to reduce their carbon footprint and meet sustainability goals, there is increased interest in the trading of carbon assets in the carbon market. Today, businesses are finding it difficult to:
a. Identify and create tradeable carbon assets.
b. Manage related inventory and logistics.
Carbon offsets and credits are ways for businesses to offset emissions that they are unable to reduce through other means such as energy efficiency measures or the deployment of renewable energy systems. The ability to create, buy or sell carbon assets independently or through an integrated carbon management solution will provide businesses another avenue to complement their sustainability strategy.
The Singapore Green Tech Challenge powered by Microsoft, SGTech and IMDA, seeks to develop and commercialize innovative sustainability solutions for businesses that can be operationalized in line with the Singapore Green Plan. The challenge also bolsters Singapore’s position as an innovator for the world, as it creates relevant, applicable, and sustainable solutions at scale, to target the world’s most pressing sustainability challenges.
What We Are Looking For
Microsoft is looking for solutions which allows businesses to:
a. Create tradable carbon assets through digitally enabled sequestration measurement.
b. Interact with the carbon market (buy/sell carbon offsets) independently or as an integrated carbon management solution, including but not limited to, carbon capture and storage at production.
These solutions could be built onto the Microsoft Sustainability Manager, or otherwise.

Identifying and Transitioning to Renewable Energy Sources
With the increasing focus on adopting sustainability practices, businesses today are pressured to review their energy sources and decarbonize their operations. However, they are finding it difficult to:
a. Identify ways to transform their business to reduce carbon emissions as carbon taxes are likely to increase.
b. Procure and effectively use alternative renewable energy sources such as solar panels.
Transitioning to renewable energy minimizes the effects of carbon pollution and reduces businesses’ emissions to achieve long-term sustainability goals.
What We Are Looking For
Microsoft is looking for solutions built on the Microsoft Cloud that will help businesses identify renewable energy sources and reduce their carbon emissions, including decarbonized transportation.
The solution should also be able to track their progress towards reducing their carbon footprint. These solutions could be built onto the Microsoft Sustainability Manager, or otherwise.

Setting and Tracking Sustainability Targets
While Microsoft and likeminded companies drive awareness and the need for climate action, businesses & SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises) are finding it difficult to:

b. Establish if the data from carbon emissions is accurate and relevant.
c. Determine which environmental sustainability goals (ESG) focus areas they want to target (Energy, Waste, Water, Ecosystem).
d. Obtain valuable insights from the data collected.

Personalised Planner for Out-of-Pocket Healthcare Expenses
The Ministry of Health (MOH) ensures that good and affordable basic medical services are accessible to all Singaporeans, appropriate to their needs. The Central Provident Fund Board (CPFB) oversees the retirement adequacy of Singaporeans, which includes ensuring that they have adequate savings to meet their day-to-day and healthcare needs in retirement. MOH and CPFB work together to provide a healthcare financing framework that provides good and affordable healthcare for Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents (SC/PRs), comprising government means-tested subsidies, MediShield Life (national health insurance), MediSave (national medical savings scheme) and MediFund (safety net to help needy Singaporeans). On top of the basic MediShield Life coverage, residents are also able to purchase additional private health insurance such as Integrated Shield Plans (IP), riders and employer medical benefits.
The healthcare financing framework involving different components can be confusing and complex to understand by members of the public. Individuals have difficulty estimating how much cash they will need to pay out-of-pocket for their medical needs after tapping on means-tested government subsidies, other national healthcare financing schemes and their private health insurance. This uncertainty creates anxiety over healthcare affordability and also makes it difficult for individuals to do proper healthcare-related financial planning.
What We Are Looking For
MOH and CPFB are looking for a solution that can provide an easy-to-use, personalised and accurate estimate of out-of-pocket healthcare cost, to empower SCs and PRs to better manage their healthcare expenses. The solution should integrate estimated treatment cost from multiple healthcare providers and factor in support from government subsidies (if applicable), payouts from MediShield Life, Integrated Shield Plan and riders (if applicable), and withdrawals from MediSave.
For a start, we will focus the scope of the solution to outpatient cancer drug treatments at Public Healthcare Institutions. This will include providing an estimate for the expected monthly out-of-pocket cost for the drug treatment (drug-indication pairing) as well as services delivered as part of the treatment (e.g., consultations, scans, lab investigations, chemotherapy preparation and administration).
