Digital Learning in Brain Aneurysm Surgery

The Challenge Owner is the national and regional centre of excellence for treatment, education and research in the neurosciences. In the area of patient care, they provide clinical neuroscience services to various hospitals in Singapore. The institute also adopts an inter-professional collaborative approach to learning and training to enhance clinical expertise across over 20 sub-specialties within neuroscience.

There is currently a gap in the provision of experiential learning to enhance clinical competency in aneurysm surgery beyond didactic lectures on theoretical medical knowledge. The current training modality also provides mainly qualitative feedback. The inclusion of quantitative measures can help learners scaffold their learning, and learn from various people and standards.

The interactive experience derived from second-by-second decision-making, immediate feedback, and direct interaction with a life-like model significantly increases the interactive aspect of learning and constructivism. The decision-making during training also feeds into the problem-solving aspect. Finally, using the patient's brain scans to form patient-specific environments allows for practice with an immediate value or benefit: this can be incorporated into the preoperative planning process for live surgery.

What We Are Looking For

The Challenge Owner is looking for a Prospective Solution Partner with experience in adult education, preferably with procedural learning, to work with them to develop surgical simulation models (open to both hardware and software) for a realistic training tool for aneurysm surgery.

Effective Online Assessment of Psychomotor Skills

The Challenge Owner is a private institution in Singapore that specialises in healthcare training. The institute’s primary objective is to nurture students to become competent healthcare personnel equipped with theoretical and practical skills. It has trained over 5,000 graduates for the Singapore healthcare industry since 2001. The Challenge Owner also collaborates with various Singapore government agencies to encourage more Singaporeans to pursue a career in healthcare and community care. Due to Singapore’s aging population, there is an increasing demand for healthcare and community care roles, and the institute plays a critical role in preparing individuals to meet these growing demands.

The growing demand for qualified healthcare professionals due to an ageing population highlights the need for a more accurate online assessment tool to increase assessment capacity. This will allow more learners to be trained and assessed quickly. Furthermore, unpredictable course learner enrollment where some assessment sessions may exceed eight learners or less than five learners has resulted in wastage of space and manpower.

What We Are Looking For

The Challenge Owner is looking for a digital solution with detailed visual field and high-quality audio-video recordings which can be utilised on everyday gadgets (e.g. mobile phones, laptops etc) and allows for effective assessment of whole-of-body movements, and for feedback to be given after the assessment. The solution should also allow assessors to perform skills assessment based on a set protocol, ensuring standardisation.

Core Skills Performance Validation for Workplace Learners

The Challenge Owner is Singapore’s pioneering and longest-serving association for human capital development training professionals. They are also a training provider for human capital capabilities and skills that seeks to enhance the growth of individual human capital development practitioners and corporations.

The validation of core soft skills is a challenge for trainers, workplace learners and the businesses that sponsor them for training. Currently, there is no ideal measurement tool for how well learners have been able to use the core skills they have been trained in to improve their work performance. Most existing assessment methods are time-consuming, overly complex for learners to use, expert-dependent, or give incomplete/unreliable validation.

What We Are Looking For

The Challenge Owner is looking for a solution to help workplace learners assess, track and validate their core skills development using SSG’s Critical Core Skills framework. Starting with the four core skills of Communication, Critical Thinking, Creativity and Collaboration for the prototype phase, the solution is intended to eventually incorporate and map to SSG’s 16 Critical Core Skills. The solution is also meant to be complementary to current Learning Management Systems.

Simulation-based Training to Prepare for Screening Seniors in the Community

The Challenge Owner is a nursing home in the community care sector with a training arm that provides both clinical and non-clinical training. They are required to provide mandatory training to certify screeners on how to use a standardised screening tool (i.e. a 32-item questionnaire) to examine the health and social well-being of seniors in the community, as a pre-emptive measure to detect potential issues and refer them to the appropriate services so that the seniors can receive an individualised, holistic healthcare plan.

Learners come from various backgrounds and demographics, and may have no/limited healthcare knowledge and differing levels of communication skills and paces of learning. However, due to the need to train up and certify a large number of screeners, it is challenging for the Challenge Owner to commit more time for each training run or to make learning more customised for learners while maintaining an optimal yet sustainable trainer-to-learner ratio.

With insufficient supervised practice opportunities, many learners are left feeling unprepared and lack confidence to pass the competency testing, or to eventually properly use the screening tool within the community.

What We Are Looking For

The Challenge Owner is looking for a simulation-based learning solution that learners can use, either supervised or independently, to gain hands-on practice and confidence to use the screening tool questionnaire and engage with seniors. The solution is intended to increase learning efficiency/effectiveness (particularly for roleplay components), reduce the teaching efforts of trainers, and increase learners' confidence in performing the screening test.

Enhancing the Informed Consent Process for Complex Surgical Procedures

The Challenge Owner is a general and acute care hospital serving mainly the healthcare needs in northern Singapore. They seek to provide quality, affordable healthcare with high standards of personalised care and a hassle-free experience for patients.

One of the procedures performed by the Challenge Owner's Department of Surgery for breast cancer patients is mastectomy, which is the surgical removal of one or both breasts. Breast surgeons work closely with plastic surgeons to refer patients who may wish to do breast reconstruction after a mastectomy.

Despite its importance, obtaining informed consent is challenging for doctors, especially for junior doctors who might not be cognisant of all relevant risks, and may not know the right level of detail to share to avoid overloading patients, which is counterproductive to patients’ retention of the information.

What We Are Looking For

The Challenge Owner is looking for a solution to improve the process of informed consent by helping doctors to better explain complex surgical options and risks to patients, and helping patients to retain the information. The solution will at the same time serve as a teaching aid for junior doctors/medical students to learn about the informed consent process (e.g. how and what to communicate to patients), and help to standardise the information shared to patients. The focus will be on informed consent for breast reconstruction surgery as an initial use case, with potential scalability to other surgical procedures. The solution will be used in the Challenge Owner’s specialist outpatient clinics.

Customised Learning Journey Through Personalised Assessments

A pioneer of Swiss hospitality education and the world’s first hotel management school, the Challenge Owner is the global reference in education, innovation and consulting for the hospitality and service sector. They offer a wide range of educational programmes from apprenticeships to master's degrees, as well as professional and executive education, to prepare their graduates to be future business leaders for the hospitality industry. The Challenge Owner has two campuses in Switzerland and a new campus in Singapore.

Despite the implementation of the LMS, designing exams remains time-consuming for academic staff. Without close supervision from the Examination Board, schools often do not conduct one-to-one exams with students, as they are prohibitive in terms of time and cost. However, exams which are not personalised may be frustrating for students, and may not have strong pedagogical value for individual students’ learning journeys.

Particularly for the hospitality and service industries, employers are looking for workers who possess a range of soft skills. However, written exams do not allow for the assessment of soft skills (e.g. they cannot capture a student's tone, behaviour, and emotions). To prepare students to meet the needs of employers, it would be beneficial for individual students’ soft skills to be assessed more frequently and effectively, and to integrate such assessment into the exam process.

What We Are Looking For

The Challenge Owner is looking for an automated solution that can help to analyse individual students’ exam data and use it to personalise their learning journeys.

Challenge Owner(s)System Integrator for Buildings and Transport (Pseudonym)
Industry Types(s)
Education Services, Environmental Services, Financial Services, Healthcare & Biomedical, Sustainable Energy

Adaptive Learning and Competency-Mapping for the Green Economy

The Challenge Owner provides sensor networks, software and services to help operators of buildings and transportation systems to achieve their sustainability, safety and productivity objectives. They provide training on environmental and sustainability reporting, smart property technology systems as well as improving health and safety of workplaces.

Organisations need to upskill their workers to meet sustainability and net-zero emissions objectives, as these are core criteria evaluated by investors. Failure to meet sustainability targets can result in significant financial losses for organisations. One of the challenges in meeting these targets is the lack of trained professionals to help organisations track progress and optimise their ability to achieve their goals. Current training solutions are inefficient and lack personalisation, causing stress for trainers and frustration for trainees. Assessing the application of skill sets within the context of learners' organisations is also challenging and time-consuming, particularly with COVID-19 restrictions and many professionals working from home. Learners also have some reluctance to complete the assessment using Google Forms.

What We Are Looking For

The Challenge Owner is looking for a solution partner with expertise in development and design of user interfaces for effective conversational learning systems and in curating data for engagement and retention as well as increasing learner interest.

Simulation-based Training to Manage Adverse Events Related to Contrast Media

The Challenge Owner is a special unit within Singapore’s largest group of healthcare institutions which was set up to enhance current radiological services by implementing patient-centric seamless care with innovation. As part of the largest radiology affiliation in Singapore, they provide extensive imaging and image-guided intervention services, including Computed Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).

Studies show that reactions to contrast media are observed in 5-8% of patients, and severe reactions are even rarer, occurring in less than 0.1% of people receiving contrast media. As severe contrast-related adverse events are rare, experience and competence among healthcare professionals vary greatly, and studies have shown low levels of preparedness in radiology departments. Relying only on theoretical management is not ideal for patient safety and outcomes. Without appropriate treatment, severe reactions are often life-threatening and can lead to undesirable patient outcomes, including fatalities.

What We Are Looking For

The Challenge Owner is looking for a simulation-based solution that can help radiology staff to learn, apply their knowledge and practice on various contrast-related case scenarios, and be assessed on the identification of various presentations, prevention, and management of emergent contrast-related adverse events. Prospective Solution Partners with a background in instructional design are preferred.

Digital/ICT, Financial Services

Interactive Community-Based Learning

The Challenge Owner is a Singapore Fintech Association-accredited social trading platform that connects professional traders, retail traders and non-traders to promote responsible trading and make trading simple and fun for non-traders to begin investing. They are also a training provider that conducts finance, sustainability and real estate-related training to upskill/reskill their community, through publicly available courses/workshops and professional certification courses in collaboration with Institutes of Higher Learning (IHLs) in Singapore. Most of their students are post-graduate adult learners between 30 to 50 years old, with varying levels of knowledge and experience in finance and investment.

In physical classroom settings, trainers actively encourage peer learning through team-based project work and peer review on assignments. However, with hybrid learning environments, it is challenging to find the right platform to create opportunities for active and sustained peer learning, or community-based learning (CBL). Hence, the Challenge Owner would like to explore digital solutions that can encourage CBL and motivate students to complete their learning journeys.

What We Are Looking For

The Challenge Owner is looking for a solution to encourage CBL and engagement to complement their executive education courses with IHLs, which are conducted in person. The solution would be a standalone system separate from the IHLs’ Learning Management Systems, and is aimed at making students’ financial learning more interactive and feeling like part of the wider community (including the Challenge Owner’s wider social trading platform community).

The hospital seeks to provide quality, accessible and integrated care to patients by offering a comprehensive range of specialist medical services, bringing together a strong multidisciplinary team of doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals to provide patients a seamless transition from diagnosis and treatment to rehabilitative and community care. They also work with other healthcare providers to provide longer-term care for chronic disease management and access to specialist care for acute and complex cases.

While junior healthcare workers are paired with a senior staff for on-the-job support, there is a need for them to build up a solid foundation in physiology concepts to understand the reasoning and context behind clinical tasks. Hence, the Challenge Owner is looking for a digital solution that can help shorten the time needed for junior healthcare workers to gain a strong foundation in physiology concepts and become independent in managing high acuity care patients, thereby complementing and reducing the teaching efforts of their senior staff buddies.

What We Are Looking For

The Challenge Owner is looking for a solution to complement the existing e-learning platforms and buddy system and help junior staff understand the reasoning behind clinical tasks and decision-making processes in a high acuity care environment. The solution should also aid in knowledge retention.
