About Challenge

Collecting traffic data – such as Vehicle Classification, Traffic Speed, Volume – is essential for traffic operations and planning. LTA is looking at ways to automate the collection of the vehicle object class data, while minimizing the impact to traffic operations, removing the need for manual data collection.

Optimising Technology for Collection of Traffic Data

The collection of traffic data (e.g. Vehicle Classification, Traffic Speed, Volume, etc.) is essential for traffic operations and planning. It is also fundamental for carrying out Traffic Impact Assessment studies when there are nearby construction work that may affect traffic flows.

LTA currently collects some of its traffic data through various automated means such as inductive loops installed at traffic junctions, where the traffic count data is collected as the vehicle passes through the loop. However, this method is unable to differentiate the various vehicle object classes, such as heavy vehicles, cars, motorcycles, etc. The vehicle object class data is thus collected via manual surveys, where manpower is deployed to count the traffic volume and identify vehicle object classes at traffic junctions.

What We Are Looking For

LTA is seeking to automate the collection of the vehicle object class data, while minimising the impact to traffic operation and removing the need for manual data collection, through either of the following options:

  1. A solution that leverages existing Junction Eyes cameras (‘camera-based solution'); or
  2. An alternative non-camera-based solution.
