By 2050, one in four people in Asia-Pacific will be over 60 years old. Beyond technological advancements that will help keep our seniors healthy, forming a seamless care continuum beyond their homes will allow them lead independent lives despite physical frailty, allowing them to age gracefully and enjoy their golden years.

To design the best ways to prevent accidents at home and improve the seniors’ quality of life, we challenge you to study the social, cultural, psychological, cognitive and biological aspects of ageing.

Your solution should be easy to use, because after all, difficulties in adoption could negate even the best intentions. Ideally, it should also foster social inclusion.

What We Are Looking For

How might smart assistive technology boost the wellbeing of our seniors and prevent accidents at home, so that we can support their healthy and active ageing?

The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the adoption of Smart Home devices, as people are spending more time at home. These devices are getting increasingly smarter by the day using artificial intelligence, machine learning, and computer vision.

The devices can learn about their inhabitants’ patterns and preferences, and even become more self-aware — capable of predicting when maintenance is required and automatically alerting the users, for example. Moreover, Internet of Things (IoT) home devices can coordinate with other linked devices for a more immersive experience.

Every device that we bring home could potentially allow the user's identity to be stolen or their privacy breached in other way. Your solution should not overlook security considerations. Also consider the long lifecycle of the Smart Home device and how likely the user would update the software proactively and frequently.

What We Are Looking For

How might a Smart Home with smart, connected devices serve and even anticipate the everyday needs of users?

Intelligent building systems are changing our workplaces, enhancing convenience, efficiency, security, and health in our day-to-day lives. The systems in a Smart Building are interoperable -- from lighting to air-conditioning to the security system. Evolving demands brought by COVID-19 highlight the need for crowd and health controls in the building.

This presents opportunities for building operators to be alerted to take necessary actions, such as performing infrastructure maintenance, addressing security breaches, or implementing safe distancing measures. Your solution should have capabilities to minimise and manage data breaches and false alarms.

What We Are Looking For

How might Building Management Systems (BMS) respond more quickly and accurately to changing requirements and conditions, so that building operators can optimise building security, climate control (temperature), lighting, ventilation, and the distribution of occupants in the building?

Equipment failure is inevitable, especially in systems that are heavily utilised. It is hard to identify a problem before a part of the equipment fails. Companies spend an average of 80% of their resource time reacting to maintenance issues, rather than preventing problems. Furthermore, maintenance processes are commonly laborious and wasteful.

With IoT, companies can take a proactive approach to improving operational efficiency and minimising unplanned system downtime by tracking system metrics, analysing equipment condition, and forecasting when maintenance should be performed. Active detection can also help prevent production accidents and ensure employee safety.

We can have an overview of assets in a single plant or an entire manufacturing network. Your solution should allow for interoperability. Also, it should minimise risks of cyber attacks that can be disruptive, even dangerous.

What We Are Looking For

How might we optimise predictive maintenance for Smart Manufacturing, so that the systems are interoperable, agile and scalable?

Data collected from public infrastructures can provide early warning of community and environmental issues. From optimising energy use to smoothening the transportation experience, to predicting and mitigating weather-related incidents, the exchange and analytics of data transforms the operations of a city. The result is a more liveable and sustainable city, and a better prepared populace.

Explore the possibilities of a better city with an Open Data system and shared infrastructure. However, note that secure data exchange is of utmost importance when integrating complex systems to create a connected database to prevent bad actors from disrupting public infrastructures.

What We Are Looking For

How might we improve the capabilities of our public infrastructure (for example, street lighting, CCTV, dustbins, billboards, etc.), so that we can monitor and mitigate traffic congestion, weather incidents, air pollution, energy consumption, etc.?

Sustainable and renewable energy will become an integral part of our energy revolution for a Net Zero future where affordable and sustainable energy is accessible to all. We are moving away from traditional centralised fossil-generated energy distribution structures to distributed renewable energy systems.

These IoT renewable energy infrastructures connect consumers directly to the smart grids, allowing for two-way communication. This results in, for example, better forecasting of weather, renewable energy demand response, and performance issues to maximise efficiency.

Secure data transmission is critical for renewable energy infrastructures as they are access points that can potentially be exploited to gain access to or manipulate the smart grid.

What We Are Looking For

How might we improve our renewable energy infrastructure (for example, electric vehicle charging stations, solar pumps, wind turbines, etc.), so that it can be more efficient and convenient for both consumers and service workers?
