AUTOMATED GRAVE EXHUMATION SOLUTION
AUTOMATED GRAVE EXHUMATION SOLUTION
Warees Investments Ptd Ltd, a subsidiary of the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (MUIS), offers a variety of services to the Muslim community in Singapore, including providing grave exhumation and reinterment1 management at Muslim cemeteries for the purposes of land optimisation through its subsidiary, Wareesan Management Pte Ltd.
Exhumation frequently includes working within tight time limitations due to the need to coordinate with the deceased’s families and relatives, who are required to be present throughout the process to witness the reinterment of their loved one’s remains. However, the current exhumation process, particularly the excavation of graves, is a time-consuming process that is labour-intensive and physically demanding to complete on time. On average, it takes around two hours for one worker (sometimes two or more workers) to manually exhume a single grave in the earth, which entails digging to a depth of around 2 metres/7 feet and then removing soil that was dug out2. The task is made even more complex and challenging due to the cemetery layout which restricts access around each grave, where there may be different types of soil, as well as the surrounding terrain (e.g. undulating surfaces, uphill and downslope). While excavators are currently being deployed in areas that are accessible, for optimised operation, only one operator can operate one machine at a time. In addition, excavators can only be used for graves located in reasonably open areas, as their passage through the cemetery is hindered by obstacles like concrete/wooden masonries on graves, which could potentially be damaged by the excavators. These challenges are exacerbated by the growing manpower shortage in grave exhumation.
Hence, in order to overcome these challenges, Wareesan is looking for a solution that can reduce the time and human labour needed for exhumation significantly.
What We Are Looking For
Wareesan is looking for a mechanised solution to lower the company’s reliance on manual labourers and/or to ease the work of manual labourers when exhuming graves. The machine must have the ability to move or be easily moved to graves located in tight spaces, and have sufficient power to break the ground and dig up to 2 metres (6.5 feet) deep.
The machine may be fully or partially automated and should only need minimal human input for operation – it may be handheld, robotised or driven. The prototype will be tested first in places with sandy and earthy soil to see how reliable and long-lasting it is. In the future, it could be enhanced to work on other types of soil, like clay and hard soil. The solution may also draw parallels to robotised/automated trench digging in a military context.

WASTE-TO-RESOURCE MARKETPLACE TO PROMOTE CIRCULAR ECONOMY
The challenge owner is a Singapore-based company that specialises in providing eco-friendly packaging solutions. They offer a wide range of packaging solutions, including food, retail and industrial packaging, and are committed to promoting sustainability and helping businesses reduce their carbon footprint.
In manufacturing, a high volume of waste is typically generated. Due to the rise in commodity prices and increased emphasis on sustainability, many manufacturing companies are looking into reusing waste materials to manage supply costs and meet net zero carbon targets. Industrial symbiosis is a form of exchange between industrial companies in which the waste or by-products of one company becomes raw materials for another, with the aim of promoting circular economy by reducing dependence on new raw materials and mitigating the environmental impact of waste generation. While such exchanges do take place in Singapore, they are often informal arrangements between companies and are not widespread as there is a general lack of information about where to find suitable waste materials.
What We Are Looking For
The challenge owner is looking for a startup with industry knowledge to leverage A*STAR capabilities to facilitate industry symbiosis in helping companies identify suitable buyers/sellers of waste materials for reuse. The solution should also help to reframe perceptions of “waste” from something meant for disposal into a valuable “resource”.
